The story of the Rinehart family’s struggle during the 1950s to survive the tragic events it endured at the hands of its neighbors on the south side of Kansas City, Missouri and the efforts of the four Rinehart brothers to leave the bitter memories of those events behind and make something of their lives. But when the brothers leave home one after the other and go their separate ways, they bring misfortune upon themselves by acting in ways that compromise their self-respect and prevent them from achieving their very different dreams of success and happiness. After nine long years, the brothers return home to attend their father’s funeral. With the support of their mother and each other, they take stock of their lives and realize the compromises they have made with their self-respect are at the heart of their disappointments and failures. With renewed determination, they go their separate ways again and make changes in their lives that promise to restore their self-respect and move them forward in their efforts to achieve at last their dreams of success and happiness.
