Reporter Harry Sinclair is suspicious of money and especially of those who have a lot of it. Assigned a story in the exclusive neighbourhood of Wychwood Sinclair expects to be bored and wishes he was home instead of working on a dark autumn night. He gets over his boredom pretty quickly once he discovers the body of lawyer, Edward Weston. The police rule his death a suicide, but Sinclair is not so sure. When the lawyer's neighbour Patricia Highcross goes missing Sinclair wants to know if she has been abducted or is she on the run? Is there is a connection to Weston's death? As he goes in search of Patricia he discovers that her husband Martin works for the hedge fund Manticore Capital. It just so happens that Manticore is buying up a lot of farm land in the middle of nowhere for reasons Sinclair finds implausible. Hoping to find a connection between Patricia's disappearance and Martin's newly acquired interest in farming Sinclair heads to the rural community of Rosewood where he uncovers Martin's plan to change the town in a way that no one could have foreseen.
