WOOLF, VIRGINIA

Opinião do Leitor

Voltar

LEITOR COMUM, O

CONTOS COMPLETOS - VIRGINIA WOOLF

VIAGEM, A

TO THE LIGHTHOUSE - WITH CD - INTERMEDIATE

Mrs Ramsey has gathered her friends and family around her in the family's summer house on the Isle of Skye. As the children play and the adults paint, talk and think, the relationships between them develop and change. Can true happiness ever be achieved or is it destined to exist only as a poignant memory?

Ele é a expressão...

Escrito a partir de inúmeras perspectivas,...

FLUSH

'Flush' offers an exploration of a life of the senses free from the tyranny of words. This book can be read as an allegorical testimony to the inscrutable, discarded, unrepresentable lives of the Victorian women poets, who were barely discussed or read in the 1930s. From a quite literally low point of view, Woolf explores...

LADY IN THE LOOKING GLASS, THE

In this book, Virginia Woolf's writing tested the boundaries of modern fiction, intending to explore the depths of human consciousness and creating a different language of sensation and thought. Sometimes impressionistic, sometimes experimental, sometimes cruel, sometimes warm and funny, these five stories describe love...

SELECTED WORKS OF VIRGINIA WOOLF, THE

Virginia Woolf displays genuine humanity and concern for the experiences that enrich and stultify existence. Society hostess, Clarissa Dalloway is giving a party and her thoughts on that one day, and the interior monologues of others with interwoven lives reveal the characters of the central protagonists.

There seems to be nothing,...

JOURNAL D'ADOLESCENCE

Car l’adolescente lit...

MRS. DALLOWAY

This novel explores the hidden springs of thought and action in one day of a woman’s life. VOYAGE OUT, THE

Virginia Woolf's first novel, The Voyage Out, opens with a party of English people aboard the Euphrosyne bound for South America. Among them is Rachel Vinrace, a young girl, innocent and wholly ignorant of the world of politics and society, books, sex, love and marriage. She is a free spirit half-caught, momentarily and...

NIGHT AND DAY

'It's impossible that we should ever marry . . . At the same time, we can't live without each other' Night and Day, Virginia Woolf's second novel, is both a love story and a social comedy in the tradition of Jane Austen; yet it also questions that tradition, recognizing that the goals of society and the individual may...

JACOB'S ROOM

Wandering through the windswept shores of Cornwall to the sunscorched landscape of Greece, his character is revealed in a...

TO THE LIGHTHOUSE

'To the Lighthouse' is at once a vivid impressionist depiction of a family holiday, and a meditation on a marriage, on parenthood and childhood, on grief, tyranny and bitterness. Its use of stream of consciousness, reminiscence and shifting perspectives, give the novel an intimate, poetic essence, and at the time of publication...

Six children - Bernard, Susan, Rhoda, Neville, Jinny and Louis...

ROOM OF ONE'S OWN, A

'A Room of One's Own', based on a lecture given at Girton College Cambridge, is one of the great feminist polemics, ranging in its themes from Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte to the silent fate of Shakespeare's gifted (imaginary) sister and the effects of poverty and sexual constraint on female creativity. This text reveals...

MARK ON THE WALL AND OTHER SHORT FICTION, THE

The fifteen stories in this volume include the only collection of short fiction Woolf published in her lifetime, the eight stories published as 'Monday and Tuesday', together with seven later stories. Without these bold and experimental forays into the short story she would never have become the great modernist novelist....

FLUSH

First published in 1933, 'Flush' is the lively story of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's cocker spaniel. Although Flush has adventures of his own, he is also the means of providing us with glimpses of the life of his owner and her days at Wimpole Street as an invalid, her courtship by Robert Browning, their elopement and life...

ORLANDO - A BIOGRAPHY

A wry commentary on gender roles and modes of history, Orlando is also, in Woolf's own words, a light-hearted 'writer's holiday' which delights in its ambiguity and capriciousness.

MAKE LEMONADE

With two kids hanging in the balance, the two teens have to figure out how to make the best out of life for themselves and each other. Written in short chapters that will have your teen...

MRS. DALLOWAY

Mrs. Dalloway chronicles a June day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway - a day that is taken up with running minor errands in preparation for a party and that is punctuated, toward the end, by the suicide of a young man she has never met. In giving an apparently ordinary day such immense resonance and significance - infusing...

BETWEEN THE ACTS

Through dialogue, humour and the passionate musings of the characters, Virginia Woolf explores how a community is formed (and scattered) over time. The pageant, a series of scenes from English history, and the private dramas that go on between the acts, are closely interlinked. Through the figure of Miss La Trobe, and...

YEARS, THE

During her lifetime The Years was one of Virginia Woolf's most popular books, and is considered to be one of the most powerful indictments of 'Victorianism' ever written. Less experimental in technique than her previous novels, it opens in 1880 and follows the fortunes of the Pargiters, a middle-class family living in...

CARLYLE'S HOUSE AND OTHER SKETCHES

From the cold formality of London town-houses with their rows of austere portraits, to the dull chaos of the academic’s abode, and the eccentric spinster’s Hampstead home, Virginia Woolf paints a series of portraits of everyday life, capturing character and setting in exquisite detail. Experimental in style, and heralding...

MONDAY OR TUESDAY

'Monday or Tuesday' - the volume of short stories that Virginia Woolf published herself -, presents a series of eight exquisite fictional reveries. A woman gazes at a mark on a wall and ponders the vagaries of thought and opinion; a succession of couples are caught up with nostalgia for their past as they stroll among...

ROOM OF ONE'S OWN, A

Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the...

ONDAS, AS

MRS. DALLOWAY

Clarissa Dalloway, the fashionable wife of a member of parliament, is seen in this novel largely through the impressions and memories within her mind. Moreover, the action is contained within the limits of a single day - the day on which she is to hold an important party.

NIGHT AND DAY

Katherine Hilbery, torn between past and present, is a figure reflecting Woolf's own struggle with history. Both have illustrious literary ancestors - in Katherine's case, her poet grandfather, and in Woolf's, her father Leslie Stephen, writer, philosopher, and editor. Both desire to break away from the demands of the...

VOYAGE OUT, THE

'The Voyage Out' (1915) is the story of a rite of passage. When Rachel Vinrace embarks for South America on her father's ship she is launched on a course of self-discovery in a modern version of the mythic voyage.

WAVES, THE

'The Waves' was conceived, brooded on, and written during a highly political phase in Woolf's career, when she was speaking on issues of gender and of class. This was also the period when her love affair with Vita Sackville-West was at its most intense. The work is often described as if it were the product of a secluded,...

SELECTED SHORT STORIES

Virginia Woolf tested the boundaries of fiction in these short stories, developing a new language of sensation, feeling and thought, and recreating in words the 'swarm and confusion of life'. Defying categorization, the stories range from the more traditional narrative style of 'Solid Objects' through the fragile impressionism...
