Sinopse

O enredo gira em torno de Anne Elliot, filha de Sir Walter Elliot, um vaidoso e esnobe baronete. No passado, Anne apaixonara-se por Frederick Wentworth, que, embora belo, inteligente e ambicioso, não tinha tradições ou conexões familiares importantes - e assim Anne fora persuadida pela família a romper com ele. Em 1815, momento em que se passam os eventos narrados no livro, a boa, generosa e sensível Anne Elliot continua solteira, mas agora, aos 27 anos, pensa com mais autonomia e maturidade. Agora, também, a situação financeira de Sir Walter Elliot é desfavorável, e ele se vê obrigado a alugar a propriedade da família. Por força do destino, o novo ocupante da residência é cunhado de Wentworth. Quase oito anos após o rompimento, Anne se verá novamente convivendo com seu grande amor, agora um capitão da Marinha. Anne e Frederick se redescobrem apaixonados, e renovam o compromisso de casamento. Esta edição traz a versão definitiva do romance, além de notas explicativas e uma cronologia da vida de Jane Austen. Por fim, o leitor poderá encontrar duas novelas da autora em português. A primeira, 'Lady Susan', é uma narrativa epistolar em que a personagem-título, uma aristocrata perversa, procura manipular a todos os parentes conforme seus interesses. A segunda, 'Jack e Alice', busca conduzir o leitor a uma festa à fantasia, para então revelar a verdadeira identidade dos demais convidados.

AUSTEN, JANE
Jane Austen nasceu dia 16 de dezembro de 1775, em Hampshire, na Inglaterra. Filha do reverendo George Austen e de Cassandra Austen, foi a segunda mulher dentre sete irmãos. Quando completou oito anos, foi enviada a um internato – junto de sua irmã Cassandra – para receber a educação formal. Seu contato com os livros vem do acesso à biblioteca da família, permitido após a volta do colégio interno. Na adolescência, Austen escrevia comédias, e seu primeiro livro bem acabado foi Lady Susan, escrito em forma epistolar, quando a autora tinha dezenove anos. Em 1797, Austen já havia escrito dois romances, Razão e sensibilidade e Orgulho e preconceito . A publicação dos títulos ocorreu só em 1811 e 1813, respectivamente, assinados com o codinome de “uma senhora”. Jane Austen também é autora de Emma, Mansfield Park e Northnger Abbey, romances nos quais buscava retratar a sociedade da época e a busca da mulher pelo melhor casamento, como única forma de ascender socialmente. Morreu em 18 de julho de 1817, aos 42 anos, vítima do mal de Addison. Deixou inacabado o romance Sandition.
