Sinopse

First published in book form in November 1850, Dickens' own favorite among his works is his most autobiographical novel, 'David Copperfield,' boasting a wealth of adventure and suspense as well as an unparalleled gallery of the author's most memorable characters. This Nonesuch edition features the author's final text and the illustrations Dickens himself selected to complement his words.

DICKENS, CHARLES
Charles Dickens began to publish sketches in various periodicals, which were subsequently republished as Sketches by Boz. The Pickwick Papers were published in 1836–7 and after a slow start became a publishing phenomenon and Dickens's characters the centre of a popular cult. He began Oliver Twist in 1837, followed by Nicholas Nickleby (1838) and The Old Curiosity Shop (1840–41).After finishing Barnaby Rudge (1841) Dickens set off for America; he went full of enthusiasm for the young republic but, in spite of a triumphant reception, he returned disillusioned. His experiences are recorded in American Notes (1842). Martin Chuzzlewit (1843–4) did not repeat its predecessors' success but this was quickly redressed by the huge popularity of the Christmas Books, of which the first, A Christmas Carol, appeared in 1843. During 1844–6 Dickens travelled abroad and he began Dombey and Son while in Switzerland. This and David Copperfield (1849–50) were more serious in theme and more carefully planned than his early novels. In later works, such as Bleak House (1853) and Little Dorrit (1857), Dickens's social criticism became more radical and his comedy more savage. In 1850 Dickens started the weekly periodical Household Words, succeeded in 1859 by All the Year Round; in these he published Hard Times (1854), A Tale of Two Cities (1859) and Great Expectations (1860–61). Dickens's health was failing during the 1860s and the physical strain of the public readings which he began in 1858 hastened his decline, although Our Mutual Friend (1865) retained some of his best comedy. His last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, was never completed and he died on 9 June 1870. Public grief at his death was considerable and he was buried in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey.

Charles Dickens's famous ghost story is as much a part of the season as plum pudding and mistletoe, and Michael Patrick Hearn, the celebrated annotator of 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,' has now prepared a sumptuous new edition of the Dickens...

LITTLE DORRIT

When Arthur Clennam returns to England after many years abroad, he takes a kindly interest in Amy Dorrit, his mother's seamstress, and in the affairs of Amy's father, William Dorrit, a man of shabby grandeur, long imprisoned for debt in the Marshalsea. As Arthur soon discovers, the dark shadow of the prison stretches far...

CHRISTMAS CAROL AND OTHER CHRISTMAS WRITINGS, A

Dickens's story of solitary miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is taught the true meaning of Christmas by a series of ghostly visitors, has proved one of his most well-loved works. Ever since it was published in 1843 it has had an enduring influence on the way we think about the traditions of Christmas. Dickens's other Christmas...

OLD CURIOSITY SHOP, THE

Little Nell Trent lives in the quiet gloom of the old curiosity shop with her ailing grandfather, for whom she cares with selfless devotion. But when they are unable to pay their debts to the loathsome Quilp, the shop is seized and they are forced to flee, thrown into a shadowy world in which there seems to be no safe...

DAVID COPPERFIELD - CASSETE

Humorous, dramatic, ironic and tender, David Copperfield has always been one of Dickens's most popular novels. From his boyhood at the knee of his nurse Peggotty, to the cruelties of Salem House Academy and his youthful adoration of Dora Splendow, David beings to learn about life, the world, and the heart. His path to...

HOUSE TO LET, A

Advised by her doctor to have a change of scene, the elderly Sophonisba takes up lodgings in London. Immediately intrigued by the vacant ‘house to let’ opposite, she charges her two warring servants, Trottle and Jarber, to unearth the secret behind its seeming desertedness. Rivals to the end, they each seek to outdo the...

HAUNTED HOUSE, THE

Compiled by Charles Dickens, and counting Elizabeth Gaskell and Wilkie Collins among its contributors, 'The Haunted House' is a tale of the supernatural with touches of pure Dickensian comedy. When the narrator espies a deserted house from his railway carriage, he determines to take up residence. But local legend has it...

CHRISTMAS CAROL - ILLUSTRATED

'Christmas Carol' was an overnight success when first published in 1843, and was followed by two further Christmas books, 'The Chimes' and 'The Cricket on the Hearth', also included in this volume. But 'A Christmas Carols' Ebenezer Scooge is one of Dickenss most unforgettable characters, a miserable skinflint without equal....

TALE OF TWO CITIES, A

After eighteen years as a political prisoner in the Bastille the aging Dr Manette is finally released and reunited with his daughter in England. There two very different men, Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat, and Sydney Carton, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer, become enmeshed through their love for...

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

'Great Expectations' follows the life of the orphan, Pip. We first meet him as a tiny, terrified child in a village churchyard. Years later, through the help of an anonymous benefactor, Pip will travel to London, full of expectations to become a gentleman. But his life is already inextricably tangled in a mystery that...

BARNABY RUDGE

'Barnaby Rudge' tells a story of individuals caught up in the mindless violence of the mob. Lord George Gordon's dangerous appeal to old religious prejudices is interwoven with the murder mystery surrounding the father of the simple-minded Barnaby. The discovery of the murderer and his involvement in the riots put Barnaby's...
