Bob Dylan Bob Dylan, born Robert Allen Zimmerman on May 24, 1941, is an American singer-songwriter and musician. He has been an influential figure in popular music and culture for five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s when he was an informal chronicler and a seemingly reluctant figurehead of social unrest. A number of Dylan's early songs, such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'", became anthems for the US civil rights[3] and anti-war[4] movements. Leaving his initial base in the culture of folk music behind, Dylan's six-minute single "Like a Rolling Stone" has been described as radically altering the parameters of popular music in 1965.[5] However, his recordings employing electric instruments attracted denunciation and criticism from others in the folk movement. Years ago they ... said I was a prophet. I used to say, "No I'm not a prophet" they say "Yes you are, you're a prophet." I said, "No it's not me." They used to say "You sure are a prophet." They used to convince me I was a prophet. Now I come out and say Jesus Christ is the answer. They say, "Bob Dylan's no prophet." They just can't handle it.     Here's the thing with me and the religious thing. This is the flat-out truth: I find the religiosity and philosophy in the music. I don't find it anywhere else. Songs like "Let Me Rest on a Peaceful Mountain" or "I Saw the Light"—that's my religion. I don't adhere to rabbis, preachers, evangelists, all of that. I've learned more from the songs than I've learned from any of this kind of entity. The songs are my lexicon. I believe the songs.  Bob Dylan  Bob Dylan (album)  The Times They Are a-Changin' (song)  African-American Civil Rights Movement (1955–1968)  Opposition to the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War  American folk music revival  Like a Rolling Stone  Blowin' in the Wind  Electric instrument  Vitoria-Gasteiz  Never Ending Tour  Golden Globe Award  Academy Award  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame  Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame  Songwriters Hall of Fame  Pulitzer Prize  Rock music  American folk music  Folk rock  Blues  Country music  Gospel music  Country rock  Singing  Guitar  Piano  Keyboard instrument  Harmonica  Joan Baez  The Band  The Byrds  Grateful Dead  Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers  Traveling Wilburys  Johnny Cash  Mesabi Range  Lithuanian Jews  Hibbing High School  Danny & the Juniors  University of Minnesota  Minneapolis  Greenwich Village  Dave Van Ronk  Fred Neil  Odetta  New Lost City Ramblers  Cameron Crowe  Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues  The Ed Sullivan Show  John Birch Society  Civil rights movement  The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll  Another Side of Bob Dylan  Spanish Harlem Incident  Leicester Square  Electric Dylan controversy  Bringing It All Back Home  Subterranean Homesick Blues  Mr. Tambourine Man  Mike Bloomfield  Ramblin' Jack Elliott  American Broadcasting Company  Woodstock  Self Portrait (Bob Dylan album)  All Things Must Pass  The Concert for Bangladesh  Watching the River Flow  David Geffen  Blood on the Tracks  Elsa Dorfman  Allen Ginsberg  Rolling Thunder Revue  T-Bone Burnett  Desire (Bob Dylan album)  Joni Mitchell  Muddy Waters  Van Morrison  Neil Young  The Last Waltz  Bob Dylan World Tour 1978  Triumph Tiger 100  Woodstock, New York  This Wheel's on Fire (song)  Nashville, Tennessee  Jimi Hendrix  One Too Many Mornings  Carole Bayer Sager  Richard Marquand  Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award  Things Have Changed  The Wall Street Journal  Confessions of a Yakuza  "Love and Theft"  Theme Time Radio Hour  Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album  I'm Not There  Christian Bale  Cate Blanchett  Marcus Carl Franklin  Mason Jennings  Tom Verlaine  Modern Times (Bob Dylan album)  New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival  The Original Mono Recordings  Random House  Bob Dylan discography  List of awards received by Bob Dylan  Jewish Defense League  Meir Kahane  Born again (Christianity)  Chabad  Jon Pareles  William Shakespeare  The Village Voice  Mick Jagger  Eminem  Patti Smith
