The Woods is the estate and manor house of the O'Neills in rural Northern Ireland. The time is 1925 - immediately after the Irish Civil War. The O'Neill girls are the daughters of a local magistrate appointed by the English king and a mother who's Celtic family once ruled the county. The sudden death of the youngest sister lights a fire under the four surviving young women. They are no longer content to pursue the conventional careers their education and training has prepared them for. Respectability and rules are out the window; nothing will stand in their way as each pursues her own idea of an authentic life - not even their mother's wrath. The novel follows the girls careers from the anything-goes artist's life of Paris in the 1920's to a convent school thrown into turmoil by a would-be Bolshevik; from scandalous liaisons to hostile engagement with British troops. The O'Neill girls are anything but dull and conventional - but then neither is their devoutly Catholic mother.
