This story was written in 1851. There was a good day: sun was shining, all the apple-trees were in blossom. There was a look of cheerfulness on everything. But on that day the church was crowded by people. People were looking cheerful, and dressed in their best clothes. But the pastor very loudly and angrily said: “God’s kindness to us men is beyond all limits.” He also said to visitors that their evil propensities would not be destroyed, nor would the fire be extinguished, and they should never find rest. The pastor described the hell to them. In one autumn evening his wife died. He was upset and his life lost the meaning. But one night the spirit of his dead wife came to him...
