Cassandra is an extremely shy girl, who has learned to hide from others, even when she is in a crowd. She keeps her head down to avoid notice, but one day she has to look up. Cassandra catches Eric’s attention. Cassandra can’t understand why Eric would be interested in her. She doesn’t believe that he would truly want her after only just meeting her. She avoids him as best as she can, telling him that she isn’t that kind of girl. Cassandra doesn’t see him as the knight in shining armor that he is. While taking a walk in the woods, Cassandra meets a man, Adaro, and her ability to be inconspicuous fails her again. Adaro stares right into her eyes and talks to her. He seems to be capable of looking right into her soul and calming her. Adaro usually avoids humans, but there is something about Cassandra. When he finds out that her father is abusive, he will stop at nothing to adopt her, even if that means breaking the laws that he holds so dearly. His need to protect Cassandra is so strong that he convinces his wife, Undine, that they are Cassandra’s rightful parents. Their greatest worry is that Cassandra will figure out what they really are, Merpeople. Cassandra has the chance to live with a real family and be loved, but first she has to break the cardinal rule and admit what is so obvious. It hurts her to admit that she is an abused child, but she does it so she can hold onto the good thing that she has found. Cassandra finally gets to have a family who loves her. She now lives in a marvelous house that has aquariums going from room to room. She has an opportunity to heal and to learn to trust others. She tells herself that it isn’t important when she notices that her new family doesn’t eat anything other than raw fish, or the fact that they don’t sleep in beds, or that they can hum so well that she feels they are hypnotizing her. The Sons of Thor are a group of five young men who protect humans from Merpeople. They have the ability to electrocute them by shooting lightning bolts out of their fingertips. Their one weakness is a Damsel in Distress, which Cassandra clearly qualifies as. Eric has to fight his fears that Cassandra’s new foster family could harm her. He has to hunt down her father, who is on the run, and convince Cassandra that he truly loves her. Not to mention, impressing his enemies, the Merpeople, so they will let him date her. This is the first title in the Daughter of the Oceans Series.
