Starship pilot Terry Radnor is elated to be among those chosen to defend the secret colony Maclairn against enemies who pose a threat to the spread of paranormal human mind powers, and commits himself wholly to its cause. On Maclairn he finds fulfillment; happily married to his soulmate and advancing rapidly in his career, he has no idea of how much grief his commitment will cost him or of the dangers and ordeals he will face beyond that world. Nor does he guess that the destiny ultimately in store for him is far stranger than anyone could have imagined.
While this series follows the Hidden Flame series--consisting of Stewards of the Flame and Promise of the Flame, which tell of the founding of Maclairn--it is a completely independent story set two hundred years later that can be read alone. Though it is not a Young Adult book and is not appropriate for middle school readers, it will be of special interest to adults and mature teens who have enjoyed Engdahl’s YA novels Enchantress from the Stars and The Far Side of Evil since it deals with some of the psi powers depicted in those books and takes a similar view of humankind's place in the universe.
From the Reviews:
On Book One, Defender of the Flame: “This book reaches back to the brio and speculation of Engdahl’s classic books of the Seventies... The reader will be taken on an exciting and suspenseful ride... With an admirable protagonist and many interesting and well-drawn characters major and minor, Defender is satisfying on multiple levels... I expected to like this book; I was startled that I loved it. A must read.” ---Nicholas Birns, author of Understanding Anthony Powell
On Book Two, Herald of the Flame: “A futuristic ride that has many parallels in today’s society. This is a ‘thinking man’s’ science fiction book - the type we need more of today!” --The Feathered Quill
On the Series: “These novels are not so much genre ‘Romance’ or even just ‘Science Fiction’ as they are Literature. These are novels about life.” --Jacqueline Lichtenberg, Alien Romances Reviews 14
