A dark and macabre tale of a disturbed young woman. Kara is a deep and introspective woman, used to obedience but deeply cynical. She is also an unreliable narrator, and her distorted vision of the world asks basic questions about dominance and obedience, and the distance between outward submission and internal spirit. The book is quite graphic at times, demonstrating the casual brutality and horror of the world, and Kara is the every woman, of a sort, struggling to discover and hold onto herself as demons, addicts, well meaning strangers, and the terrible power of her own emotions threaten to destabilize and destroy her. She suffers the abuse of the world casually, but when she is suddenly free she has no real sense of how to be, who she is, or how to behave. Struggling from extreme to extreme, she tries to hold onto what matters most to her as the world seeks to punish and destroy it, either through malice or outright indifference.
