Aromatherapy is the use of plant oil extracts for healthy treatments to invigorate the body and restore the mind. It is one type of holistic or natural healing. Aromatherapy is actually an exact science done in two parts. The first part involves the careful selection of plants believed to have therapeutic effects to the mind and body. The second part involves the careful extraction of oils from these plant sources through a chemical process to obtain their restorative and curative benefits for better human consumption. The oils derived directly from these plant sources are known as essential oils. When inhaled, these essential oils signal the olfactory system to activate the limbic system so that the person can recall pleasant memories and emotions causing him to relax and rest. Aromatherapy has an ancient history which stems all the way from the times when pharaohs ruled the land in Egypt and Babylon. Even the father of modern medicine was known to give out prescriptions of essential oils and herbs. It was, however, a French cosmetic chemist who made the study of aromatherapy well-known in this modern age. Modern research has revealed that aromatherapy does bestow healing and restorative benefits. Lavender oil, for instance, can heal burns rapidly without scarring. It is also known to relieve depression and calm down anxiety. Eucalyptus is a good treatment for respiratory congestion. There is an assortment of essential oils out there. In fact, it is highly recommended that every household should have them on hand for easy relief of common aches and pains.
