Nascido em 11 de janeiro de 1842 em Nova Iorque, Estados Unidos, William James é considerado um dos pais da psicologia moderna. Filósofo do pragmatismo, graduou-se em medicina pela Lawrence Scientific School, atual Universidade de Harvard. Foi professor na mesma instituição onde ministrou aulas de fisiologia, anatomia, psicologia e filosofia.
