Most people have heard of the Ark of the Covenant. But, did you know that there are eight Arks in the Old Testament with varying descriptions? If the Ark of the Covenant was at the heart of the religion of the Israelites, to whom did the other seven belong? And, if not the Israelites, why are they included in the Old Testament? It is only when we use the Hebrew Bible and its language as a research tool that we discover their true theological significance. Over hundreds of years historical events had a profound theological effect on the people of the Old Testament and their relationship with their God. Do these descriptions reflect how they perceived their God as a result of these events? Or do they belong to ancient disparate tribal traditions brought together by a united Israel? Do they have temple or palace origins? I invite you to share this journey with me as a 'literary archaeologist' as I peel away the many layers of the narrative and reveal not only the real purpose of these Ark descriptions, but discover who the authors were, when they were written, and why.
