The first multi-volume history of the American theatre, The Cambridge History of American Theatre is authoritative and wide-ranging and covers all aspects of theatre from buildings to playwriting, directors, to designers. It recognises changing styles of presentation and performance, and addresses the economic and social contexts of the drama presented. Volume I brings together the work of ten major authorities on American theatre and drama. Like each of the forthcoming three volumes, volume I includes an extensive overview and timeline. The following chapters explore specific aspects of American theatre up to c. 1870.
