This is a socio legal study on the Irish Unfair Dismissals Act 1977. This dissertation has two objectives. Firstly, to establish the extent, if any, the 1977 Unfair Dismissals Act has curtailed or enhanced employer control in the employment relationship. Secondly, to establish the impact this legislation has had on the employment relationship and various actors in the workplace. To achieve these objectives this dissertation has used both quantitative and qualitative research techniques consisting of (a) an analysis of a sample of unfair dismissals cases (1977-1989) which were subjected to a quantitative analysis using SPSSx, (b) in-depth interviews with a sample of senior Irish personnel managers, and (c) individual Employment Appeal Tribunal determinations are used on a case by case basis to corroborate and support facts.
