This work provides a balanced synthesis of observations and theories on the largest-scale circulations of the atmosphere. It is both an advanced-level text as well as a reference source. The work presents observational information first, then theory. Many of the sections, however, are self-contained, and cross-referencing points out connections between the sections. Most derivations are presented in complete detail and descriptions of the northern and southern hemisphere flows are balanced. The book is intended for students and researchers in atmospheric science. The author has also created a home page on the Internet devoted to the material in the book. It includes a set of errata sheets, a growing group of homework problems, and a place for updates and commentary beyond the material.
