Chaim Nachman Bialik is the most influential of the modern Hebrew poets, one of the major Jewish cultural influences of his age. In his lifetime, he was hailed as the poet laureate of Jewish nationalism, the poet of hope and revival in an age that witnessed the Russian Pale of Settlement, pogroms, the Russian Revolution, the rise of Zionism, and the reemergence of Hebrew as a living language. This bilingual selection of Bialik's poetry combines Bialik's original Hebrew and sensitive translations by the Hebrew scholar, David Aberbach. Included is an extract from 'In the City of Slaughter,' the poem that made Bialik famous when it first appeared in 1903 as one of a series of 'poems of wrath' - as well as a number of his folk poems which have frequently been set to music.
