When Diana and Maud return home from working in the Cardiff Royal Infirmary, life in the Welsh valleys seems tougher than ever. In the Depression, money is scarce and jobs hard to find. Then tragedy strikes when Maud contracts tuberculosis. There seems little hope of her survival without expensive care she cannot afford. The future looks bleak until help comes from an unlikely source. Hard nosed Ronnie Ronconi, whose family own the local cafe, is used to getting what he wants. Realising he is in love with Maud, he is determined to save her life, no matter what the cost.
